About This Place

Donohue's Steak House, nestled at 845 Lexington Ave in the heart of New York City’s Upper East Side, offers an authentic and unpretentious dining experience that pays homage to the classic American chop house tradition. This venerable establishment steers away from flashy trends to focus on delivering hearty, satisfying fare with an old-world charm that feels like stepping into a bygone era of New York dining.

Specializing in succulent steaks and thoughtfully prepared chops, Donohue's prides itself on quality cuts like the 16oz Prime Sirloin Steak, served alongside creamy mashed potatoes and velvety creamed spinach — a combination that conjures comfort and indulgence in every bite. A favorite among patrons is their selection of loin chops and the broiled twin center-cut pork chops, each cooked to tender perfection and rich with flavor. While some classic steakhouse staples such as ribeye and iconic sauces might be absent here, the dishes offered are executed with care and bold seasoning that enhances the natural essence of the meat.

Before the main course, guests can savor starters like the crispy, golden Mozzarella Sticks or the robust French Onion Soup Au Gratin, simmering with melted cheese and deep, savory notes. Seafood lovers won’t be disappointed either, with options including Broiled Branzino, tender Broiled Filet of Salmon, and golden deep-fried jumbo fantail shrimp accompanied by tangy tartar sauce — each dish evoking the freshness of the ocean with familiar, comforting flavors.

The menu is rounded out with an appealing array of drinks, from classic martinis to a hearty Bloody Mary, and an impressive wine list that pairs perfectly with the robust dishes. Donohue’s also surprises with its charming desserts like Fried Ice Cream and Coffee Cake, adding a sweet conclusion to a flavorful meal.

The atmosphere reflects nostalgia and a welcoming spirit: think cozy booths, a 1950s vibe, and an old New York allure that transports diners away from the modern rush. Real customers appreciate this no-frills environment—one that’s intimate and relaxed, perfect for intimate dinners or quiet gatherings. Kristen Fitzpatrick noted it’s “oldschool, nofrills, and proud of it,” a hidden gem treasured for its authenticity rather than trendy reinvention. Kathleen Ober’s experience celebrating her mother’s 70th birthday here highlights the warm charm that radiates throughout the meal.

While some point out that the ambiance is simple—booths can be a bit tight, and there’s no Wi-Fi—the trade-off is an ambiance that evokes nostalgia and unpretentious enjoyment of food done right. Caressa Losier pointed out the nicely seasoned steaks, albeit slightly charred at the edges for her medium well, and praised the preserved 1950s atmosphere.

In essence, Donohue's Steak House is a celebration of traditional American dining. It’s not about flash or trendiness but a steadfast dedication to straightforward, hearty dishes crafted with passion and served in an inviting, timeless setting. If you’re seeking a dining spot that invites you to savor every bite and soak in classic NYC charm, Donohue’s offers a quietly satisfying experience that resonates with both locals and visitors alike.

Excellent meal! However, you may be disappointed if you go in expecting a Smith & Wollensky–type steakhouse. The menu skips a few of the usual steakhouse staples — no ribeye, hanger, or classic sauces like au poivre or bordelaise. The steaks they do serve are very good, but I’d call this place a chop house before a steakhouse. It’s old-school, no-frills, and proud of it — the kind of spot that serves a solid meal without pretense or pomp. It’s great for a special night out, yet completely unfussy.

Great food. But no wifi, and tight booths. The steak was seasoned nicely, but it was a little burnt around the edges (too tough to be edible), especially for a medium well order. Very pricey! One steak meal with two sides and a sparkling water costed $97. But the 1950s vibe has been preserved. Overall, it was a decent spot. If you are in the area, I would recommend it.

Did not disappoint! Brought my mother here for her 70th birthday for a late lunch. Picked Donohue's because of it's old New York charm. Food was fantastic. We each ordered the French Onion Soup and a Burger, topping mine off with the perfect not so dirty martini. Highly recommend.. but don't tell everyone.. it felt like a hidden gem.

Old school NYC establishment. The food also is old fashioned; no hipster salads and sandwiches here. Food is okay; better locations in NYC, but a great place for a quiet and intimate meal and drinks between Bloomies and Hunter College. Outdoor seating is a plus to watch neighborhood locals go by.

Old school cool! Red tablecloths, black leather booths, active senior citizens & camaraderie, wholesome food, attentive servers, excellent vibe! Highlights were chilled gin martini glass, large pork chop with applesauce, homemade carrot cake, and apple pie were delicious! We must protect this establishment at all costs! We learned about it from an elderly acquaintance and we will be back!

Donohue’s is a rare find in a busy city that has not compromised on techniques and presentation from a foregone era that is not maintained much in this town. You could be from any decade and enjoy this experience (and many are from highly varied age groups who know a good thing when they see it.) Their burgers are quite good and the sides are tasty, although more seasoning throughout might be a plus.
